How do I know if I have a dental emergency?
A dental emergency includes any issue requiring immediate attention to halt bleeding, save a tooth, address severe infections, or mitigate intense pain. Situations like severe infections or dental abscesses demand urgent action and could be potentially life-threatening. Immediately contact your dentist or, if unavailable, seek immediate medical attention.
You’re likely facing a dental emergency if:
- You have a dislodged tooth
- Your tooth is cracked or chipped
- You’re experiencing persistent oral bleeding
- You’re suffering from severe pain or swelling in your gums, mouth, or jaw
- You notice swelling in your cheeks or face accompanied by a toothache
- You have sustained a jaw injury
- Your teeth display unusual sensitivity that persists
- Your tooth feels loose or misaligned
-
What if I have a chipped or cracked tooth?
Contact your dentist immediately if your tooth is chipped or cracked. While minor chips can be addressed during a regular visit, a cracked tooth might indicate internal and external damage.
- Rinse with warm water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling.
- Use acetaminophen for pain relief, not aspirin.
- Avoid applying topical pain relievers directly to your gums, as they can harm gum tissue.
-
What if my tooth is loose but still attached?
Call us immediately for an urgent consultation if your tooth is loose or misaligned. Try to reposition the tooth gently with your fingers without forcing it. We will provide further guidance.
